Wolf Creek, Montana
THE EXPERIENCE
Elkhorn Ranch sits beside the Gallatin River about a mile outside the boundary of Yellowstone National Park, roughly 34 miles north of West Yellowstone. Ernest and Grace Miller pitched their first tent here in 1922, and the ranch has welcomed guests ever since; it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It is a classic, unplugged dude ranch. The 15 guest cabins, built in the 1930s from local logs, have been modernized with running water, showers and clawfoot tubs and are heated by wood stoves, but there are no TVs, no in-cabin Wi-Fi and no cell service. Each guest is matched with one of the ranch’s 100 horses, and the riding program includes pony rides for little ones. Guided fly fishing for cutthroat, brown and rainbow trout, casting clinics and guided hikes run Monday to Friday in summer, with all the fishing gear provided, and there are programs for kids aged 6 to 12 and for teens, plus adults-only weeks.
The rate includes three meals a day, gratuity and all guided activities. In winter the ranch offers weekend sleigh rides with lunch or dinner. Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is about 58 miles north. Ask the ranch for current season dates and rates.
