Saratoga, Wyoming
THE EXPERIENCE
The HF Bar is a historic guest and working cattle ranch in the Bighorn Mountain foothills at Saddlestring, about 20 miles northwest of Buffalo, Wyoming. It covers nearly 7,500 acres bordering Bighorn National Forest and describes itself as over 100 years in the saddle. Frank O. Horton, a Wyoming state senator and U.S. Congressman, bought the property in 1911, and the ranch is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the HF Bar Ranch Historic District (1984).
Guests ride through the Bighorn Mountains, high plains and mountain meadows, fly fish for trout on dry flies, catch-and-release, shoot sporting clays and hike. Evenings bring drinks before dinner at the Elk Shed Bar and events such as live local music, and children have their own Kid Team program. The kitchen serves fresh, organic food and handles diets such as gluten-free and paleo.
Guests stay in the ranch’s cabins. The land is protected by a perpetual conservation easement with The Nature Conservancy and is an Audubon Important Bird Area. The ranch is open in summer; book by email or phone and ask for current rates.
