Red Feather Lakes, Colorado
THE EXPERIENCE
Where Every Moment Tells a Story
Elk Mountain Ranch calls itself Colorado’s highest guest ranch, at about 9,600 feet near Buena Vista, in the part of the Rockies with the largest cluster of 14,000-foot peaks in the lower 48 states. Tom and Sue Murphy run it and have been in dude ranching for more than 25 years.
Riding is the most popular activity, and Tom is a firm believer in natural horsemanship, with horses trained fairly and patiently so they suit both beginners and experienced riders. The other highlight is a full day of white-water rafting on the Arkansas River, often called Colorado’s whitewater capital. There are also archery, marksmanship and trapshooting tournaments, and the kitchen has a following of its own, from eggs Benedict and brandied French toast to beef tenderloin.
