West Yellowstone, Montana
THE EXPERIENCE
Rocking Z Guest Ranch is a small family ranch near Wolf Creek, Montana, at about 4,000 feet along Little Prickly Pear Creek, a blue-ribbon trout stream. The family has been on the land for four generations, and the ranch takes no more than 18 guests, from March through October, with a three-night minimum.
Horseback riding is the central activity, using Parelli Natural Horsemanship. Rides suit all levels, from beginner rides and lessons to cattle work, team penning, driving a team and faster trotting and loping rides, with trail riding from age 5. There is fly fishing on the creek, archery and shooting, roping, hiking and cycling, and guests can join in ranch chores. Programs run for ages 9 to 17.
Guests stay in en-suite rooms in two four-room lodges built in 2000 and two single lodge rooms, each opening onto a covered porch. Family-style meals include trail lunches, with a beer or glass of wine at dinner, and gluten-free and other diets can be handled. There is a hot tub and saloon, the ranch is dog-friendly, and Helena Regional Airport is about 26 miles away with a shuttle available. Ask the ranch for current rates.
