Cody, Wyoming
THE EXPERIENCE
The UXU Ranch sits at about 6,500 feet in the Shoshone National Forest near Wapiti, roughly 17 miles from Yellowstone’s East Gate on the road from Cody. The site began as a sawmill around 1898, and in 1929 Bob Rumsey received a Forest Service permit to run it as a dude ranch; most of its buildings date from the 1920s and 1930s and were built from lumber milled on site. The ranch was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
UXU is small and personal, with room for about 20 guests, and offers four- or five-night all-inclusive stays from June through September, starting with a Sunday-afternoon welcome. Three chef-prepared meals a day, guided trail rides, lodging and a night at the Cody Night Rodeo (until August 31) are included. Guests can also add guided Yellowstone day trips and white-water rafting, and spend the rest of the time fishing, hiking, birdwatching, roping or stargazing. Children’s programs cover ages 2 to 12, with trail riding from age 6.
Guests stay in the historic 1929 log cabins, updated with private bathrooms, mini fridges and decks, and the Bad Bear Bar serves cocktails and wine. Yellowstone Regional Airport in Cody is about 37 miles away and the ranch offers a shuttle. Ask the ranch for current rates.
