Bandera, Texas
THE EXPERIENCE
The Mayan Dude Ranch sits on 350 acres along the Medina River, a mile southwest of downtown Bandera, the Texas Hill Country town that calls itself the Cowboy Capital of the World. Judy and Don Hicks took over the ranch in 1951, and four generations of the Hicks family now help run it.
It is an easygoing, family-friendly ranch that works well for a few nights as well as a full week. Each overnight stay includes three meals and two horseback rides on Hill Country trails, plus the ranch’s daily program: breakfast hayrides, trick-roping demonstrations, country-and-western dinner concerts and longhorn rides, with swimming and tubing on the Medina in warm weather. Adults can end the day at the watering hole in the main lodge.
Guests choose between lodge rooms and private cabins. San Antonio is about an hour’s drive away, which makes the Mayan an easy add-on to a Texas trip. Ask the ranch for current rates and seasonal programs.
