Solvang, California
Alisal Ranch
A 10,000-acre working ranch in Santa Barbara wine country
Most dude ranches close for the winter, but not all. Choose between snowy mountain ranches with riding, skiing and sleigh rides, and desert ranches where winter is the main riding season.
For a snowy ranch winter, Vista Verde, C Lazy U, Latigo Ranch and Devil's Thumb Ranch in Colorado, The Ranch at Rock Creek and Lone Mountain Ranch in Montana, and Triangle X in Grand Teton all take winter guests.
For sunshine, the Arizona desert ranches, including Tanque Verde, White Stallion and Circle Z, are at their best from late fall to spring. Alisal in California is open year-round.

Winter at a mountain ranch is quieter and more relaxed than summer. Riding is at a walk through the snow, and the days fill with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sleigh rides and evenings by the fire. Some ranches are known for their Nordic trails: Devil’s Thumb grooms trails for cross-country skiing that usually open in late November or early December, and Latigo Ranch runs its own Nordic center at 9,000 feet. Stays are usually shorter than summer weeks, often three or four nights.
In southern Arizona the riding season runs the other way. Circle Z near Patagonia is open from late October to early May, White Stallion rides straight into Saguaro National Park, and Tanque Verde runs a children’s program, which makes it one of the few winter options for families with kids’ activities. Expect warm days, cool nights and saguaro instead of snow. See our Arizona guide for more.
Some are. Mountain ranches such as Vista Verde, C Lazy U, Latigo, Devil's Thumb, The Ranch at Rock Creek and Triangle X take winter guests, and the Arizona desert ranches are at their best from late fall to spring.
At snowy ranches: riding at a walk through the snow, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sleigh rides and fireside evenings. At desert ranches: full riding programs in warm, sunny weather.
Southern Arizona is the classic winter riding destination, with ranches around Tucson, Patagonia and Wickenburg. Alisal in California is also open year-round.
Yes. Tanque Verde in Tucson runs a children's program, and several mountain ranches, including Vista Verde and C Lazy U, welcome families in winter. Check kids' activities for winter dates specifically.
