The short answer

The best-known luxury ranches for families with children are C Lazy U and Vista Verde in Colorado, The Ranch at Rock Creek, The Resort at Paws Up and Mountain Sky in Montana, and Lost Creek Ranch & Spa beside Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

All of them run children's programs, so kids ride and spend time with counselors while parents ride at their own pace. Most are all-inclusive and work on week-long summer stays. For younger children, check the minimum riding age and the age groups of each kids' program.

The ranches

What makes a family ranch “luxury”?

At a classic family dude ranch you get a cabin, family-style meals and riding. A luxury family ranch adds more on both sides: chef-led dining, larger cabins or private homes, spa treatments and wine for adults, and a structured children’s program with dedicated counselors, often split by age. C Lazy U, for example, runs separate groups for ages 3 to 5, 6 to 12 and teens.

How to choose

  • Kids’ program ages. Programs usually start at 3 to 6 years old. Ask whether toddlers can join and whether babysitting is available in the evenings.
  • Riding age. Most ranches let children ride on the trail from about age 6, with pony or arena rides for the very young.
  • What “all-inclusive” covers. Vista Verde includes house wines, kids’ and teens’ programs and the airport shuttle; elsewhere drinks, spa treatments, fly-fishing guides or gratuities may be extra.
  • Stay format. Peak summer usually means a full week with a fixed arrival day. Ranches with nightly rates, such as Paws Up, are easier for shorter trips.
  • Location. Lost Creek sits beside Grand Teton National Park, and Lone Mountain Ranch near Big Sky is close to Yellowstone, which makes it easy to combine a ranch week with the parks.

When to book

Luxury family ranches fill up first for the July and August school holidays, often a year ahead. June and the last weeks of August are easier to get and usually quieter. Several of these ranches also open in winter, including C Lazy U, Vista Verde, The Ranch at Rock Creek and Lone Mountain Ranch.

At what age can children ride at a luxury dude ranch?

Most ranches let children join trail rides from about age 6, with pony or arena rides for younger children. Kids' programs often start at age 3. Check each ranch page for its own ages.

Most of the ranches on this list describe their stays as all-inclusive, but what that covers varies. Drinks, spa treatments, guided fishing, gratuities and airport transfers are sometimes extra, so compare inclusions as well as prices.
