Cranbrook, British Columbia
Three Bars Guest Ranch
Mid-range
THE EXPERIENCE
Sundance Guest Ranch lies in the dry, open hills of the Thompson River valley near Ashcroft in southern British Columbia, a landscape that feels more like the American West than the coastal rainforest most visitors expect. Horses are the focus: the ranch keeps a herd of more than a hundred, and trail rides head out across the surrounding rangeland.
Riders need to be at least eight years old for the trail rides; in summer, a supervised program for younger children includes pony rides in the arena, so families with small kids still work. Between rides there is hiking, river rafting, trout fishing, a swimming pool, massage treatments and golf at a nearby course, and Saturday nights bring a steak barbecue and a country-rock evening.
The ranch has 22 simple, comfortable rooms, and home-cooked meals are served in the main lodge. Ask the ranch for current rates, season dates and what is included.
