THE EXPERIENCE
Moose Head Ranch is a family-run dude ranch at about 6,300 feet near Moose, Wyoming, close to Grand Teton National Park and about half an hour from the town of Jackson. It hosts up to 45 guests from June through August, with five-night stays.
Riding is in small groups, morning and afternoon, often with only four riders behind a wrangler, and there are all-day rides with lunch cooked over an open fire. Beginner rides, faster trotting and loping rides and trail rides for ages 6 and up are offered, and families often ride together with just their own wrangler. Fly-fishing lessons are taught on the ranch, and stocked trout ponds are catch-and-release. Elk, buffalo, coyotes and eagles are regularly seen on rides, and there are after-dinner wildlife drives.
Guests stay in private cabins, from small cabins for two to larger family cabins; most have Teton views and many sit on a pond or a stream. Meals include breakfast, a lunch buffet and dinner with cocktails and appetizers beforehand. The ranch is clear that it has no children’s program or separate children’s dining room: the idea is that families do things together. Staff can plan excursions such as rafting, hiking and trips into Jackson. Jackson Hole Airport is about 20 miles away. Ask the ranch for current rates.
