Laramie, Wyoming
THE EXPERIENCE
Spotted Horse Ranch is a family-owned dude ranch at about 6,500 feet near Jackson, Wyoming, with its main lodge right on the banks of the Hoback River. It has operated as a dude ranch for over 50 years and is open from May through October for around 30 guests.
Horseback riding and fly fishing are the two main activities. Rides head into the Gros Ventre Wilderness and Bridger-Teton National Forest and are matched to ability, with beginner and faster rides, private lessons and an all-day lunch ride; trail riding starts at age 6, with pony rides for small children. Anglers fish the Hoback on the ranch or take guided trips on the Snake, Salt or Green, and there are casting lessons. The weekly schedule includes the Jackson Hole rodeo, a hot springs soak and rafting trip and live music. Summer is especially family-oriented, and babysitting is available.
Guests stay in stand-alone cabins from one to three bedrooms. Meals are family-style at long tables, with a daily happy hour, and there is a saloon and game room. Stays are six nights in high summer and three nights at the start and end of the season. Jackson Hole Airport is about 30 miles away. Ask the ranch for current rates.
