THE EXPERIENCE
Dunton Hot Springs is a restored 19th-century mining town deep in the San Juan Mountains, on the other side of the mountain from Telluride. Long before the miners came, the Ute used the springs; the miners later blasted the original spring open to feed a bathhouse. Today the whole ghost town has been rebuilt as a luxury retreat of hand-built log cabins, with the hot springs at its heart.
The springs are the main event. They spread over about a third of a square mile, and the property even has a small, tepid geyser that erupts roughly every 45 minutes. Between soaks there are strenuous mountain hikes from the doorstep and massages, and the historic dance hall is still used for gatherings. Dunton offers overnight and day packages, and the entire town can be rented for retreats, reunions and weddings.
Dunton is more an intimate mountain resort than a working dude ranch, a good fit for couples and small groups who want history, hot water and quiet. Telluride Regional Airport is the closest airport. Ask Dunton for current rates, packages and seasonal activities.
