Defa's Dude Ranch

A Defa family ranch in the Uinta backcountry since the 1940s

THE EXPERIENCE

Where Every Moment Tells a Story

Defa’s Dude Ranch sits in the Ashley National Forest near Hanna, in Utah’s Uinta backcountry, and has been owned and run by the Defa family since the 1940s. Its history goes back further: during Prohibition it reportedly served as a moonshine stop. The turn-off has no sign, which tells you something about the character of the place.

The season runs from May to October. Days are for horseback riding, hiking, fishing and camping, and evenings end at the ranch’s cowboy bar and dance hall. Meals are served in a 1950s-style café, and guests stay in 18 hand-built cabins.

Defa’s is rustic, relaxed and affordable in spirit, a good fit for families and groups who want an old-fashioned mountain ranch. Ask the ranch for current rates.
