Dubois, Wyoming
THE EXPERIENCE
Absaroka Ranch sits at about 8,000 feet at the headwaters of Wyoming’s Wind River, near Dubois and below the Absaroka Range, with elk, moose, bighorn sheep, bears and eagles as neighbours. With room for only about 16 guests in four remodeled two-bedroom cabins, it is one of the smallest and most personal ranches on our list.
The summer season runs from June through August, with four- or six-night stays. Riding is the main activity, from beginner rides to faster rides and wilderness pack trips, with trail riding from age 5 and pony rides and a children’s program for younger guests. Fishing, hiking and photography fill the rest of the days, and the ranch schedules wellness weeks and adults-only weeks. In the fall it hosts hunters.
Three family-style meals are served daily in the main lodge, along with morning coffee and evening cocktails and appetizers. Jackson Hole Airport is about 78 miles away, and the ranch offers an airport shuttle. Ask the ranch for current rates and what is included.
